In the town of Oaxaca, south Mexico, and its surrounding villages, Mexicans celebrate ‘Dia de Muertos’, a 3 day festival that involves religion, processions and partying through the long days and nights. The festival culminates with an all night vigil on All Saints’ Day when families and friends spend the night in candle-lit cemeteries to be with the spirits of their departed.
‘Dia de Muertos’ was exhibited in the Leica City Store Gallery (The Royal Exchange), London in November and December 2019. The exhibition comprised 24 B&W images, that portray the celebrations leading up to the all-night graveside vigil, and 9 colour images, that portray the graveside vigil. The series was featured in The Guardian.
