A small selection of images from 'Windrush: Portrait of a Generation', a photo-essay initially exhibited in the Oxo Gallery on London's Southbank (May 23rd - June 10th 2018) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the arrival in Tilbury of the ship 'Empire Windrush' on June 21st 1948. The exhibition attracted 13,000 visitors and extensive media coverage including The Observer, The Guardian, The BBC, and The British Journal of Photography. The exhibition toured 4 further venues during 2018 and 2019.
'Windrush: Portrait of a Generation' comprises twelve separate 'photo-stories', nearly all in 'black and white', that together encompass the south London lives of these first Caribbean migrants as photographed by Jim Grover over an eleven month period in 2017/18. The dedicated exhibition web-site, with more information, content, images and stories is here. You can also buy the 245-page book (£30, incl P&P) that accompanied the exhibition, and which includes all of the exhibition content (including 12 interviews with members of ’The Windrush Generation’), either directly from Jim (use the Contact form on this website) or from Amazon. More details of the book are available on the dedicated exhibition website.
